Biscuits and gravy are popular breakfast dishes in the United States, particularly in the southern states.

The origins of biscuits and gravy can be traced back to the early settlers of the southern United States, who used simple ingredients like flour, milk, and bacon fat to make biscuits. Gravy, made from the drippings of the bacon, was added as a way to stretch the limited ingredients and create a filling meal.

In the southern United States, biscuits and gravy is often served as a traditional breakfast dish, but it can also be found on the menus of diners and cafes throughout the country.

Biscuits and gravy is a comfort food for many people, and it is often served at home-style diners and cafes. Some people also like to put their own spin on the dish by adding different ingredients like cheese or herbs to the gravy or using different types of meat, such as sausage or bacon.

Another interesting fact is that Biscuits and Gravy has a long history in Southern cuisine and is considered to be a staple dish of the region. It has also been recognized by the U.S. Congress as a “Regional Dish of the South” in the year 1997.

Biscuit and Gravy Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 cup shortening

  • 3/4 cup milk

  • 1/2 pound breakfast sausage

  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups milk

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).

  2. In a large bowl, mix together 2 cups flour, baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Cut in shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in 3/4 cup milk until the dough comes together.

  3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead briefly. Roll or pat out dough to 1/2 inch thickness and cut with a biscuit cutter. Place biscuits on a baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.

  4. In a skillet over medium heat, cook breakfast sausage until browned. Stir in 2 tablespoons flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually stir in 2 cups milk and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 2-3 minutes, or until thickened. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  5. Serve gravy over warm biscuits.
